Flushing is the more densely built up part of the 7th Community District of Queens: except on its western fringe, which contains a manufacturing zone, most of its buildings are classified as multi-apartment housing. That stands in contrast to the rest of the Community District, which is dominated by small one- and two-family residential buildings.
It is the busiest shopping district in Queens and its streets are often crowded.
Flushing is about 55% Asian-American and is home to the largest Chinese community in New York City. The majority of its residents come from mainland China and Taiwan, although there are significant numbers of immigrants from other Asian countries. About 30-40 years ago, the neighborhood was Italian, Irish and East-European/Jewish. Some of these old-time residents still live in the area.
