The Upper West Side is a large, densely populated, eclectic neighborhood which combines proximity to Central Park with an extremely developed infrastructure for comfortable living: there are countless stores, restaurants, supermarkets, and services. In addition, Lincoln Center, located in the southern portion of the neighborhood, is one of the country's top cultural centers.
The UWS's population has always been considerably more mixed (along ethnic, cultural, economic, and professional lines) than that of its eastern counterpart. At times, especially in the 70s and 80s, this mixed character resulted in an absurd situations where the neighborhood was simultaneously one of the most expensive and also one of the most dangerous in the city. Since then, the dangerous aspect has more or less been addressed: the neighborhood is much safer now. Unfortunately, the rental prices have remained on the high side.
