Central Midtown can best be described as the averaged-out image of New York in the minds of people who've never actually been here. Some key features of this image are the skyscrapers, neon lights (at night), insane crowds (at most hours), cacophony of car horns (ditto), and so on. AKA New York, New York.
The neighborhood's focal point and its most famous locale, Times Square, is known the world over for precisely this type of ambience. Thanks to its stereotypically "NYC" charms and also to the fact that the area boasts one of the highest concentrations of hotels in the city, tourists on Central Midtown streets occasionally outnumber the locals.
That said, some New Yorkers aren't dead set against rubbing shoulders with commuters and out-of-towners in their daily life. Besides, some of the Midtown side street blocks can actually be relatively quiet – at least after office hours. Still, if you are considering moving here, make sure you visit the area at least twice – before and after dark – to confirm that you're comfortable with both neighborhood guises before putting your signature on a lease here.

That's the most typical kind of building in Central Midtown. The northern part of the neighborhood contains some older co-op buildings. That's building type two.
