Profile: Broadway is the longest street in Manhattan, traversing much of the borough diagonally (the street's overall direction changes in the upper portion of the island). Because of its sheer length, Broadway passes through many distinct neighborhoods. Not all of those are residential: large strips of Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, for example, are almost entirely commercial. The area roughly between West 42nd and West 54th Streets has become eponymous with the theater in America.
