The Ohio-born architect is remembered as a pioneer of skyscraper construction, known mostly as the architect of the Woolworth Building (Lower Manhattan, NYC) and the U.S. Supreme Court Building (Washington, DC).

Some of Gilbert's buildings in New York (e.g. 60 Spring aka 225 Lafayette) have been converted into residential properties.
