Formerly the seedy punk rock mecca, home base of bands like Talking Heads and clubs like CBGBs, over the past 30-odd years the East Village has been turned into a much safer, more sanitary – and considerably more expensive – version of its bad old self. It is still a young and "happening" neighborhood, with plenty of bars and cheap eats, but no punk rock musician without a trust fund will probably think of settling here.
Newly minted MBAs and freshly hired Wall Street analysts, however, may want to take a good look – especially if they have a bit of a rebel streak in them... or simply like to knock back a few beers on the way home from a long day at the office. The neighborhood has plenty of options for doing just that. Additionally, it offers easy access to Wall Street.

The East Village, once famed for its shabby buildings and cheap apartments (especially in six-floor walk-ups and the like; fit only for the fittest), has definitely moved upmarket. Most new buildings built here since about 2000 are of the "luxury dorm" variety and the renovations of the older stock have brought sizeable rent increases.
