Central Midtown is what many out-of-towners imagine the entire city of New York to be. Skyscrapers galore, crowds, neon lights in the evening, a cacophony of car horns at all hours, and so on. The neighborhood's focal point and most famous location, Times Square, is best known precisely for this type of ambience. Thanks to the neighborhood's signature "NYC" charms and also due to the fact that the area has one of the highest concentration of hotels in the city, tourists on the streets may occasionally outnumber locals, especially in the Time Square area.
That said, some New Yorkers don't mind living amid the commuters and out-of-towners and in fact, many side street blocks are rather quiet, especially after office hours.
Since much of the area consists of office towers and commercial buildings, relatively few residential buildings exist, except on side streets (where tenement-type residential buildings are the norm). Some developers have been trying to change that with a few upscale condo projects. Apart from those, the northern part of the neighborhood contains quite a few older co-op buildings. Luxury rentals have been built here as well.
