Manhattan House

DESCRIPTION

A 587-unit post-war building that by some accounts, started the "age of white-brick monstrosities" in the city. Nevertheless, in 1952 the building was awarded the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects award for outstanding apartment house. And just to set right all those colorful adjectives used to describe Manhattan House, the building's brick is, in fact, self-cleansing light gray. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Mayers & Whittlesley, it was built in 1950.
